Week 2 Misinformation Assignment

One example of misinformation that happened recently is the illusion that the Dodgers Stadium was flooding due to Hurricane Hilary. This is clearly an example of misinformation because when an Instagram account called Los Angeles Dodgers Aerial Photography posted the stadium, it was not meant to provide wrong information to deceive people but instead was being interpreted differently by the viewers due to the optical illusion.

I connected this to Defining Miscommunication and Understanding Its Bounded Nature: Using Expertise and Evidence for Describing Misinformation by Emily K. In the article, they mentioned how evidence and expertise need to be used when identifying and describing misinformation. They also mentioned how this misinformation happens when it's not intentional, and it happens because there is a lack of evidence and limited knowledge about the event. Because no one saw the Dodgers Stadium up close and our only reliable source is the footage posted from Aerial Photography that shows a moat formed around the outside of the building at first glance, we would be persuaded to believe it.

Another example that talks about misinformation and disinformation is the Lil Tay death incident. Lil Tay's account has gotten hacked and it was used to spread false information about her death and her brother's death. This was entirely false after we got word from the teen's family that Lil Tay's account was compromised by a 3rd party and was used to spread false information. This was obviously a form of disinformation as the account was hacked and spread information with malicious intentions.

I connected this to the Lexicon of Lies: Terms for Problematic Information by Caroline Jack. Caroline mentions how information can be manipulated by using information operations and terms like parody. Information operations, which refers to systematic attempts to steer public opinion by using inaccurate information, and satire, which refers to exaggerations and ironies to amuse the audience, were both implemented in the Lil Tay incident since hackers would use Lil Tay's account to share the fact that she has passed away and also exaggerating it by letting her management confirming it with Variety.
